WestConn Scores 34 Consecutive Points to Defeat UMassD, 34-19

The Corsairs took a 13-0 lead before losing control

DANBURY, Conn. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football team dropped a key, Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC), game to WestConn, 34-19, Saturday night at the Westside Athletic Complex.

The Corsairs fall to 3-2 and 1-2 in the MASCAC, while WestConn improves to 3-2 and 2-1 in conference play.

Sophomore quarterback Dante Aviles-Santos finished with 169 passing yards and a touchdown, adding 24 yards on the ground with a rushing TD. Junior running back Luis Gonzalez rushed for 75 yards and a score, while 5th-year senior wide receiver Douglas Machado had 69 receiving yards and a TD.

Senior JP Mason led all players with a career-high 18 tackles with 14 solo. 5th-year senor Sean Reall finished with nine tackles, seven solo, and junior Josh Lacerte had eight tackles. 

For WestConn, sophomore quarterback Mack Driver took home three touchdowns, while junior tailback Chad Blasky ran one in as well. Freshman quarterback John Giller tossed a TD to classmate Julian Ferguson.

The Corsairs scored first. On their second drive of the night, UMassD took the ball 77 yards on 11 plays. Machado came away with 29 receiving yards and freshman Marvens Jean ran for 34 yards in the drive to put the Corsairs on the 1-yard line to set up Gonzalez for the score to put the road team ahead, 6-0.

UMassD took a 13-0 lead when Aviles-Santos connected with Machado for a 10-yard touchdown with 14:57 in the second quarter.

WestConn then took over, scoring 34 consecutive points. Driver ran two touchdowns home from three and 17 yards away to give WestConn a 14-13 advantage with 7:25 in the second. Blaszky then rushed for a 16 yard TD with 2:32 before halftime to extend the lead to 21-13.

Driver scored his third rushing touchdown with 8:22 in the third quarter, and Giller found Ferguson to make it a 34-13 advantage with 6:36 to go in the fourth.

The Corsairs scored on their final drive of the night, using 14 plays to take the ball 84 yards. Aviles-Santos capped off the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to give the game its final score.

UMass Dartmouth is back at home on Saturday for Blue & Gold Weekend when the Corsairs take on Mass. Maritime at 2:30 p.m.
