GORHAM, Maine – Senior midfielder
Rony Morales sent home a penalty kick in the 55th minute to power the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to a 1-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Saturday afternoon in a Little East Conference (LEC) men's soccer match on Hannaford Field.
Â
The Corsairs (5-2-1, 2-1 LEC) created the decisive scoring opportunity, when Morales was tripped inside the top of the 18-yard box while chasing down a blocked shot. The senior from Seekonk, Mass. stepped to the dot and tucked his second game-winning goal of the campaign inside the lower, right corner, to give the visitors an advantage they wouldn't relinquish.
Â
UMass Dartmouth nearly doubled its advantage in the 84th minute, when freshman
Cameron Jacob broke in behind the Southern Maine (4-5-1, 0-4 LEC) defensive third. The Husky keeper came off his line and thwarted Jacob's attempt.
Â
Senior
Jake Castro played all 90 minutes in net and registered one save to earn the victory, while junior Jacob Statires made four stops for the Huskies.
Â
UMass Dartmouth held 10-5 advantage in shots, while Southern Maine earned seven of the 11 corner kicks.
Â
UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, when the Corsairs travel to Massachusetts Maritime Academy.Â
