Corsairs Suffer 4-0 Loss to Southern Maine

Freshman goalkeeper Jess Costa made a career-high 11 saves

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Playing at Cressy Field for the first time in 24 days, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's soccer team suffered a 4-0 loss at the hands of Southern Maine Saturday afternoon.

For the Corsairs (1-5-1, 0-3-0 LEC), freshman goalkeeper Jess Costa finished with a career-high 11 saves, while the Huskies (6-2-2, 1-2-1 LEC) tallied 28 shots with 15 on goal.

Southern Maine scored three goals in the first half and one more in the second.

The first goal for the Huskies came in the eighth minute off a corner kick. Their first shot attempt was saved by Costa, but freshman Kiki Huntress controlled the ball off the rebound and found the back of the net.

Senior Kait Bernier and freshman Kaitlyn Nguyen answered with quick shots, but could not even the score. Southern Maine's junior Emma Forgues extended its lead to 2-0 in the 20th minute off an assist from senior Alex Allain.

The Huskies struck again just before halftime in the 43rd minute when senior Ciera Berthiaume scored from Huntress to make it a 3-0 game.

On its fourth shot of the second half, Southern Maine's sophomore Mia Sargent scored the final goal of the day.

Freshman Tahlia Salgado had a late opportunity for UMass Dartmouth, but her shot was saved in the 87th minute.

The Corsairs are back at home on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for a match against Bridgewater State.
