Corsairs Clinch LEC Tournament Spot on Senior Day

UMass Dartmouth celebrated its six seniors

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team celebrated its seniors with a Little East Tournament clinching victory over Castelton, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field.

Honored for their accomplishments on and off the field were John Aguiar, Jake Castro, Will Cochran, Rony Morales, Uan O'Brian and Goncalo Roias.

The Corsairs (7-5-2, 3-3-1 LEC) are now on a two-game winning streak, while the Spartans (4-11-0, 2-5-0 LEC) have officially been eliminated from playoff contention.

Castleton put a scare in the Corsairs in the sixth minute when senior Jacob Godfrey's shot was inches away from going in, but slammed off the crossbar. It was back-and-forth from then on until the 34th minute when Lucas Passaro sent home his team-leading third goal of the year off an assist from Aguiar to make it a 1-0 game. That score would remain until the half.

UMass Dartmouth wasted little time extending its lead to 2-0 in the 53rd minute. This time it was Aguiar finding the back of the net off a double-assist from Roias and senior Gabe DeOliveira, who is planning to return next season.

The Spartans cut its deficit in half in the 67th minute when freshman Adolphe Alfoni scored from classmate Toby Ritzkowski.

Freshman Jacob Murphy then found open space in front of the goal in the 79th minute and capitalized on his opportunity to bring the score to 3-1.

Castelton's Godfrey scored off a rebound just a minute later, but time was on UMassD's side as the Corsairs hung on for the win.

UMass Dartmouth will now get set for a non-conference match at Coast Guard on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
