Corsairs Suffer 4-3 Setback at Fitchburg State

A different member of the team scored each goal for UMassD

FITCHBURG, Mass. - The UMass Dartmouth hockey team held a 3-2 lead late in the second period, but Fitchburg State rallied from behind to hand UMassD a 4-3 setback Thursday night in Fitchburg.

Senior Jimmy Pelton picked up a goal and an assist for the Corsairs (4-3-0, 2-2-0 MASCAC), while juniors Austin Miller and Justin Weinbrenner also lit the lamp. Scoring for the Falcons (3-0-0, 3-0-0 MASCAC) were juniors Hunter Fortin, Joshua Miller and Rece Bergeman, along with freshman Zackery Diamont.

The Corsairs tipped the scoreboard first when graduate student Dillon Radin and junior Cade Hanley found Austin Miller in the slot for his third goal of the season. Less than two minutes later the Falcons evened the match when Fortin, sitting on the back door, knocked in a pass from junior Anthony Ceolin past the UMassD goaltender.

UMass Dartmouth broke the stalemate with a goal from Weinbrenner at the 18:20 mark, however Fitchburg State answered with a power-play score from Joshua Miller with seven ticks remaining in the frame.

The teams traded goals in the second period. The Corsairs took their third lead of the game, capitalizing on the man-advantage when Pelton notched a power-play goal midway through the stanza. The Falcons knotted the score at 3-apiece just before the end of the period. Breaking out of the defensive zone, freshman Thomas Harty found Diamont streaking down the right wing where the newcomer deposited his first collegiate goal at 19:53.

Bergeman would score the game-winner when he collected a rebound and deposited his fourth goal of the season for the power-play goal.

UMass Dartmouth remains on the road when they face Salem State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
