NEW BEDFORD, Mass. -Â Sophomore
Dominic Dumas netted the game-winning goal as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth hockey team defeated Suffolk, 5-4, in a back-and-forth game Sunday night at Hetalnd Arena.
Dumas added two assists for the Corsairs (6-3), while freshman
Tim Kippenberger also had a goal and two assists. Junior
Michael Perrone found the back of the net along with graduate student
Dillon Radin and 5th-year senior
Kai Kapossy.
Senior
Chris Stangarone made his first start of the season in goal and earned the win with 36 saves.
A different member of the team scored each goal for the Rams (1-5-2), who have now lost four consecutive games.
It only took 1:14 for the Corsairs to light the lamp for the first time. Dumas and senior
Derek Britner found Perrone to make it a 1-0 lead. Suffolk evened the score at the 9:06 mark of the first period on a score from senior Shawn Montgomery. Radin then made it a 2-1 UMass Dartmouth advantage with just over two minutes to go in the first with helpers from senior
Jimmy Pelton and Kippenberger.
Suffolk evened the score at two with 9:17 on the clock in the second period when senior Billy Roche scored. Kapossy then put the Corsairs back on top, 4-3, with assists from Radin and junior
Stephon Perreault.Â
Dumas opened the third period with his first-career goal, which became the game winner, off assists from Perrone and Kippenberger to make it a 5-3 lead. Suffolks' sophomore Samuel Rand scored with 9:57 to go, and UMass Dartmouth's defense held off an onslaught of shots by the Rams in the closing minutes to hang on for the win.
UMass Dartmouth is back on the ice at Assumption on Wednesday at 6:50 p.m.
