Corsairs Sweep RIC with A Pair of Walk-Offs

DARTMOUTH, Mass.- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth picked up two wins in exciting fashion, defeating the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen in back-to-back walk-offs in today's doubleheader.

GAME 1 | UMassD 4, Rhode Island College 3
The Corsairs struck first on an RBI single from senior Leah Major (Fairhaven, Mass.) that drove in classmate Julia Sorrentino (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.).  The score remained knotted at 1-0 until a late rally from the Anchorwomen put the visitors up 3-1 in the top of the seventh.

UMassD battled back in the bottom half of the seventh. Singles from Sorrentino and sophomore Lynsie Miracle (Richland, Wash.) put runners in scoring position. Quick baserunning from pinch hitter junior Sara Orton (Swansea, Mass.) cut the lead to 3-2 on a passed ball. A sacrifice fly from Major brought home Miracle and junior Marisa Minore (Branford, Conn.), clinching the victory for the Corsairs.

Senior Jill Richards (Kingston, Mass.) earned her second win of the season, allowing just four hits and striking out four. Freshman pitcher Caitlin Lopez was charged with the loss for Rhode Island College, allowing six hits and four runs.

GAME 2 | UMassD 3, Rhode Island College 2

The Anchorwomen were the first on the board in game two, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI double from senior Amber Wainwright (Taunton, Mass.).  The score held until the home half of the fourth, when the Corsairs regained the lead. An RBI single from Richards brought in senior Kylie Fletcher (Dighton, Mass.). Sophomore Marissa Liberti (Westboro, Mass.) put UMassD up 2-1.

Rhode Island College quickly countered, knotting the score at 2 on an RBI single from freshman Avery Katz (Brookfield, Conn.). Miracle led off the inning and reached second on a fielding error. Miracle stole third and put herself in scoring position when freshman Kaitlyn Shirshac (Enfield, Conn.) stepped up to the plate.

Shirshac laid down a suicide squeeze that brought home Miracle, securing the sweep for UMassD
Shirshac earned her first win of the season from the circle, allowing four hits and striking out seven in her complete-game outing.  Shirshac found her groove in the second inning as she struck out the side. Sophomore Faith Turinese (Plainville, Mass.) was tasked with the loss for Rhode Island College.

The Corsairs return to action Thursday, April 29th as they travel to Plymouth State for a pair of Little East Conference contests at 2:00 and 4:00PM. Fans can catch the action at littleeast.tv.
