DARTMOUTH, Mass. — University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Director of Health Services Dr. Marianne Sullivan was selected as the John C. Frye Athletic Service recipient this afternoon, when the Corsairs announced their annual department awards program.
John C. Fyre '71 enjoyed a three-decade relationship with UMass Dartmouth and its predecessor Southeastern Massachusetts University until his untimely passing in 1995. Frye served as the men's basketball official scorer and athletic department's historian. The service award in his honor has become a source of pride to present each year to someone most deserving of his memory. Mike Silva '74, a former coach, employee, and longtime sports journalist, was the inaugural recipient in 1998.
Sullivan has been a central figure in coordinating all health and safety planning processes for UMass Dartmouth to return to on-campus activities during the current global healthcare pandemic. She was responsible for the design, implementation, and daily execution of the on-campus testing facility at Woodland Commons. Sullivan managed the partnership with Broad Institute, while also serving as the liaison between the University and Dartmouth Department of Public Health.
Sullivan played an invaluable role behind the scenes to chart the course for the Corsairs to safely resume athletic activities. She provided the Athletics COVID-19 Task Force with guidance and support this summer to ensure our policies protected the health of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff, while also complying with CDC, state, and local regulations. Sullivan worked tirelessly on behalf of our intercollegiate athletic programs by overseeing the contract tracing program and arranging testing schedules to allow our student-athletes to safely compete and practice. Without her dedication and commitment to our student-athletes, Athletics wouldn't have been able to resume activity. We are forever indebted to Dr. Marianne Sullivan for her partnership and collaboration.
