SALEM, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth men's soccer team fell, 4-2, at Salem State Wednesday night. They were the first Corsairs team to compete this fall and it was the first game for the team in over two years.
The Corsairs (0-1) had seven shots on-goal and three corner kicks, while the Vikings (1-0) finished with 12 shots on-net and four corners.
Junior
Nilin Nehra scored in the 60th minute for UMassD, while junior
Cody Santo found the back of the net in the 67th minute. Senior goalkeeper
Jake Castro finished the match with six saves.
After a scoreless first half, the goals came early and often in the second. Salem State's Cam Downer broke the scoreless tie in the 49th minute off an assist from James Meli.
A few moments later in the 57th minute, the Vikings extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal by Kendy Prince assisted by Fabricio Torres.
UMass Dartmouth took full advantage of a corner kick in the 60th minute as Nehra found the back of the net off an assist by
John Aguiar to cut the score in half.
Salem State Answered right back when Price scored his second goal of the game in the 63rd minute to put his team up 3-1.
Santo then went unassisted in the 67th minute to bring the score to 3-2 and give his team a chance as the clock ticked towards zeroes.
UMass Dartmouth had a chance to tie the game in the 80th minute, but a defensive save by the Vikings kept them on top. Joao DeSouza sent home the dagger in the 87th minute to seal the 4-2 victory.
The Corsairs are off until Sept. 8 when they play their home opener against Salve Regina at 7 p.m. at Cressy Field.
