DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Sophomore quarterback
Dante Aviles-Santos threw for 325 yards, five touchdowns, and added one on the ground, for a grand total of six TD's to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football team (2-0) over Dean College (1-1), 48-29, Saturday afternoon at a jam-packed Cressy Field.
It was the first football game at Cressy in 672 days and the Corsairs took full advantage. Junior running back
Luis Gonzalez rushed for 152 yards and a score with a long of 41, while freshman tailback
Marvens Jean picked up 72 yards on the ground and a touchdown with a long of 31.
Fifth-year senior wide receiver
Douglas Machado caught seven passes for 196 yards and two TD's. Freshman
Antonio Brown had one catch, which resulted 55-yard touchdown. Freshman
Mike Vincent hauled in a 41-yard TD catch and
Thomas Zednik also had a touchdown through the air.
The Corsairs recorded 594 yards of total offense on 71 plays for an average of 8.4 yards per play.
Sophomore linebacker
Jackson Wellman led the Corsairs with 11 tackles, including eight solo. Sophomore defensive back
Shane Meerbott finished with nine solo tackles, while freshman linebacker
Sam Alicea brought down the Dean QB for a sack.
Aviles-Santos connected with Vincent for a 41-yard touchdown pass with 13:25 left in the first quarter. Dean's junior quarterback David Curry then answered back with a 61-yard TD run on the Bulldogs' first play of the drive to take a 7-6 lead.
Two minutes later, Aviles-Santos hit Brown for a 55-yard score to retake a 12-7 advantage. At the 8:11 mark of the first, Machado came down with a 78-yard touchdown pass from Aviles-Santos to give the Corsairs an 18-7 lead.
The scoring went away in the second quarter, but it was Aviles-Santos, who ran in a 1-yard QB draw to extend the Corsair lead to 24-7 with 11:22 on the clock in the third. Dean finally got off the schneid with 1:58 to go in third when Curry found sophomore Jordan Mason for a 24-yard score to make it 24-14. Aviles-Santos then connected with Zednik for a 14-yard touchdown pass to end the third quarter with the score, 30-14.
The Bulldogs completed a 44-yard TD pass and catch to make it an eight-point game with 13:48 to go in regulation. Aviles-Santos then scored his sixth touchdown with a 9-yard pass to Machado to make it a 36-22 advantage with 11:27 to go. Dean's final touchdown of the day was with 8:10 remaining. Curry found junior Quintus Reid for a 13-yard score.
The running backs sealed the deal. Jean punched in a 2-yard score, and Gonzalez broke away for a 40-yard touchdown run in the closing minutes to send the home crowd into a frenzy.
The Corsairs start MASCAC play next when they travel to Framingham State for a noon kickoff.
