DARTMOUTH, Mass. -Â Senior goalkeeper
Jake Castro made a full-extension diving save on Saint Joseph's leading scorer DeAnte Anderson's penalty kick in the 86th minute to force overtime and eventually end the match in a scoreless draw.
Castro finished with seven saves for the Corsairs (2-1-1), who fended off 22 shots from the Blue Jays (2-1-1).
UMass Dartmouth tallied 11 shots with three on goal and five corner kicks, compared to 10 corners for USJ.
Neither team was able to get much going offensively through the first 42 minutes of the first half. The Corsairs then fired away four of the final five shots of the half, three of which came off the foot of senior
Rony Morales.
As it has been all season, the UMass Dartmouth defense was strong in the second half, coming up with an answer for 12 Blue Jay shots. USJ had its best opportunity in the 86th minute when it was awarded a penalty kick. That was when Castro laid out for the save and sent the match into overtime.
Overtime number one was a defensive battle, and Castro made two more saves in the second OT to finish the match with no score.
UMass Dartmouth begins its Little East Conference schedule on Saturday when it hosts Plymouth State on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
