Morales' Free-Kick Goal Wins it in Overtime

It took until the 107th minute for UMassD to take it

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Senior Rony Morales fired a free kick from 20 yards out in the 107th minute and went top shelf to give the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Plymouth State in its Little East Conference (LEC) opener Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field.

The Corsairs (3-1-1, 1-0 LEC) outshot the Panthers (0-4, 0-1 LEC) 27-9 and 12-3 on goal. UMass Dartmouth also had nine corner kicks compared to one for Plymouth State.

UMass Dartmouth dominated the match throughout and had many opportunities to take the lead.

Plymouth State's sophomore goalkeeper Nicolas Cornejo recorded a career-high 11 saves to keep the Corsairs at bay.

The Corsairs had six shots on goal in the first half, three of which came off the foot of junior Cody Santo, but were all denied by Cornejo.

Three more shots came Cornejos way in the second from junior John Aguiar, and twice from sophomore Joseph Paiva.

Cornejo made two more saves in overtime, but UMass Dartmouth finally found the back of the net on Morales' free kick to end it.

The Corsairs are back at Cressy Field on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for a meeting with Fitchburg State.
