UMass Dartmouth Opens Season with 2-2 Draw Against Dean

Meredith Castro and Jillian Prout scored for the Corsairs

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth women's soccer team opened its season Thursday night at Cressy Field and went the distance with Dean College, coming away with a 2-2 draw in double overtime.

The Corsairs (0-0-1) outshot the Bulldogs (0-0-1), 34-7, and had 12 shots on goal compared to two for opposing team. Sophomore Meredith Castro scored early in the match, while senior Jillian Prout sent home the equalizer late in regulation. Lindsey Adams and Nicole Seidell picked up goals for Dean.

In goal, freshman Jess Costa and junior Kat Hubbard each had one save.

UMass Dartmouth started the match at a blazing pace. It took less than two minutes for Castro to race ahead of the Dean defense and find the back of the net to put the Corsairs on top, 1-0.

Moments later in the fifth minute, Dean put pressure on the Corsair back line and Adams was fouled inside the goalie box, setting her up for a penalty kick. She took full advantage and snuck the ball past the goalkeeper to even the score at 1-1.

The quick goals continued as Seidell found the back of the net in the 10th minute off an assist from Janey Boldrighini to make it a 2-1 Bulldog lead.

That score held for the remainder of the first half as UMass Dartmouth had many chances to tie the game, outshooting Dean, 14-2 in the final 35 minutes of the first frame.

The Corsairs did everything they could to tie things up, blasting 12 shots compared to two for the Bulldogs over the first 42 minutes of the second half. A corner kick finally gave UMassD life and Sarah Vieira found Prout for the equalizer in the 83rd minute to send it to overtime.

UMass Dartmouth outshot Dean 5-1 in the extra frames but was unable to break the draw as time expired.

The Corsairs will now prepare for their next match at Salem State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
