Bernier Scores Twice in 5-0 Win Over Salem State

Kait Bernier scored in the 4th and 35th minutes

SALEM, Mass. — University of Massachusetts Dartmouth senior Kait Bernier (Dartmouth, Mass.) produced two goals and an assist to power the Corsairs to a 5-0 victory at Salem State University this afternoon in a NCAA Division III women's soccer non-conference match.  UMass Dartmouth held a decisive 37-12 advantage in shots to improve to 1-0-1 on the season.

Bernier paced the Corsairs offensive attack with her first collegiate multi-goal contest and a career-high five points.  Senior Jillian Prout (Dartmouth, Mass.), first-year Kaitlyn Nguyen (New Fairfield, Mass.) and senior Sarah Vieira (Dartmouth, Mass.) each scored first half markers as the visitors built a 5-0 halftime advantage.

UMass Dartmouth raced out to an early advantage, scoring two goals within the opening four minutes of regulation.  Prout registered her second marker of the season, when she converted a feed from Bernier in the third minute.  Less than a minute later, Bernier doubled the Corsairs lead with her first goal of the campaign.

UMass Dartmouth continued its momentum in the 12th minute, when Nguyen collected a deflected shot and tucked her first goal of the season inside the far, left post.  The Corsairs added a pair of insurance markers in the final 11 minutes of the half to close out the scoring.

Junior Kat Hubbard (Haverhill, Mass.) earned the shutout and her first collegiate victory by making five saves.  Cheyenne Frazier made 12 stops in the opening 45 minutes, while Lily Pfefferle came on in relief and recorded six saves.

UMass Dartmouth will return to action at 7pm on Tuesday, Sept. 7 when the Corsairs host Springfield College.
