Corsairs Fall to Springfield, 7-1

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's soccer team fell, 7-1, to Springfield College Wednesday afternoon at Cressy Field.

The Corsairs (1-1-1) suffered a loss for the first time this season, while the Pride (1-1-0) picked up their first victory of the year. Senior Sarah Vieira scored the lone goal for UMassD. Freshman goalkeeper Jess Costa finished the match with 10 saves.

The goal scorers for Springfield were senior Kaleigh Dale, three consecutive by junior Kellie Smith, junior Nicole Sweeney, and sophomores Karly Suppicich and Jen Walker.

After senior Jillian Prout's shot went wide right in the second minute, the Pride raced down to the other end of the field and capitalized on their first shot attempt in the fourth minute. Senior Maddie Bonavita found Dale to make it a 1-0 score.

Springfield's Smith then completed her hat-trick in an 11 minute span. Her first goal came in the seventh minute, her second was in the 14th, and Smith scored her final goal of the day in the 18th minute. Dale had two assists on those goals, and junior Hannah Kolodziey picked up a helper on Smith's third goal to extend the Pride's lead to 4-0 at halftime.

The Pride scored three more quick goals to open the second half. Sweeney found the back of the net on a free kick in the 50th minute, Suppicich scored from senior Heather Jennato in the 53rd, and their seventh goal by Walker was in the 58th minute, assisted by Sweeney.

Vieira sent home the Corsairs only goal in the in the 81st minute off an assist from freshman Madison Durkin.

UMass Dartmouth plays next at Cressy Field at 4 p.m. against Wellesley College.
