Eastern Nazarene Sweeps Corsairs at the Tripp

Freshman Kate Wade led the team with 12 kills

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Eastern Nazarene came into the Tripp Athletic Center Tuesday night and came away with a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-23, 25-17) over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth volleyball team.

Freshman Kate Wade led the Corsairs (3-5) with 12 kills, while sophomore Devon Laing recorded seven kills and a match high 18 digs. For the Lions (7-5) Eliana Baran led all players with 18 kills and also had eight digs. Freshman Emma Graves tallied 11 kills, while senior Amya Altman collected 11 digs.

An ace and three kills boosted Eastern Nazarene to a 4-1 advantage in the early going. UMass Dartmouth then closed the gap to 6-5 as Wade and sophomore Marley Alexander each picked up kills. After each side traded points until the score was even at 12, the Corsairs went on a 6-2 run, with kills by Wade and freshman Lauryn Latimore, to bring the lead to 18-14. The Lions then scored five consecutive points and kept their momentum going to win the first set, 25-23.

The Corsairs got off to a fast start in the second set with kills by Laing, Latimore and Wade to jump ahead, 12-5. With UMass Dartmouth on top, 18-14, the Lions rattled off an 11-5 run and scored the final four points of the set to take it, 25-23, and go ahead, 2-0, in the match.

Eastern Nazarene began the third set by taking a 12-6 lead and eventually extended its advantage to 20-10. Five straight points from the Corsairs closed the gap to 20-15, but the Lions finished the set on a 5-2 run to take the match, 3-0.

UMass Dartmouth is at Lasell on Thursday for a 7 p.m. start.
