Corsairs Sunk by Anchorwomen

Sophomore Teja Andrews led the team with 14 points

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's basketball team suffered a 73-59 setback at the hands of Rhode Island College Wednesday night at the Murray Center.

Sophomore Teja Andrews led the Corsairs (8-5, 2-2 LEC) with 14 points, while senior Jordan Moretti was also in double figures with 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Kaylin Zalewski finished with nine points, and junior Haley Reinold tallied eight points.

The first place Anchorwomen (12-4, 7-0 LEC) were led by freshman Angelina Nardolillo, who recorded a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Rhode Island College took a 4-0 advantage until senior Jessica Carroll and 5th-year senior Meagan Donovan each scored in the paint to even the score at the 6:40 mark of the first. The Anchorwomen scored the next six points, but a three by Donovan stopped the run, to cut the deficit to 10-7 with 3:34 to go. Rhode Island College then closed the first on a 9-4 run to take a 19-11 advantage to the second.

The Anchorwomen opened the second stanza on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 27-11 after the first minute and half. UMass Dartmouth clawed its way back into the game by going on an 8-4 run, but Rhode Island College made two layups in the final minute of the half to stay on top, 36-21.

RIC maintained its lead throughout the third quarter. Every time the Corsairs made a big shot the Anchorwomen would answer back to stay ahead, 57-37, heading to the fourth.

UMass Dartmouth has come back to win in each of its last two games and came close in Providence, this time by going on a 19-4 run over the first six minutes of the final quarter. Moretti scored the first five points of the sequence. Zalewski, senior Caroline Wilson and Andrews kept it going, and Carroll sunk a triple to cut the deficit to 61-55 with 4:14 left in the game. That was as close as the Corsairs would get as the Anchorwomen closed the game on a 12-5 run.

The Corsairs are at WestConn on Saturday at 2 p.m. for their next matchup.
