Total-Team Effort Gives Corsairs Dominant Win Over WestConn

Five players scored in double figures

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – A total-team effort led the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's basketball team to an 83-41 blowout victory over WestConn Friday night at the Tripp Athletic Center.

UMass Dartmouth assisted on 25-of-32 made shots and was an efficient 10-of-23 (43.5%) from deep. The 41 points allowed is also the fewest given up this season.

Five members of the team scored in double figures for the Corsairs (10-5, 4-2 LEC). Senior Jordan Moretti posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds with six assists, while senior Shaelyn Carreiro led the scoring charge with 18 points and added six rebounds. Senior Caroline Wilson had 15, Sophomore Kaylin Zalewski tallied 11 and sophomore Teja Andrews finished with 10 points, five assists and four boards.

Three players accounted for 39 of the 41 points for WestConn (6-11, 1-7 LEC). Senior Katelyn Fanning had 14, junior Ashley Rilley tallied 13 and sophomore Nicole Vivian chipped in 12.

UMass Dartmouth dominated from the start. Six points by Carrerio, five by Andrews and a Moretti basket put the Corsairs up 13-0 at the 6:05 mark of the first. After WestConn got one point on a free throw, Wilson canned a triple and UMassD scored the next nine points to make it 22-1 at the end of the quarter.

Buckets by Moretti, Wilson and a 3-ball from Carreiro made it 34-1 with 5:45 until halftime. WestConn finally rattled off four-straight points and got some shots to go, but 3-pointers by Wilson and Zalewski made it a 44-11 lead at the break.

WestConn began to have more success putting the ball in the basket in the second half, but the game was well in hand for the Corsairs. UMass Dartmouth made four threes and Moretti had nine points in the frame to end the quarter ahead, 68-27.

The fourth quarter saw baskets by sophomore Isabella Graziano, freshman Nicolette D'Itria, and a sweet no-look pass from sophomore Jaelyn Lavigne to classmate Jemima Joseph.

UMass Dartmouth is back at the Tripp Athletic Center on Monday at 6:30 p.m. against UMass Boston.
