DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth field hockey team suffered a 2-1 setback to Salem State at Cressy Field Saturday afternoon.
The Corsairs drop to 2-6 and 0-4 in the Little East Conference (LEC), while the Vikings improve to 2-5 and 1-3 in the LEC. Graduate student
Kylie Dias scored the lone goal for UMass Dartmouth, it was her team-leading fourth of the season.
UMass Dartmouth had opportunities to score in the first quarter. Senior
Hannah Niemi had two shots, while the Corsairs went for five penalty corners in the first 15 minutes of action.
All of the scoring took place in the second quarter. It only took Salem State until the 16:46 mark to take the lead when senior Mackenzie Schmink tipped in deflection from classmate Mikayla Mason. UMass Dartmouth evened the score on a penalty corner, sophomore
Jenna Carvalho found Dias for the slap shot with 17:43 on the clock. The Vikings scored the game-winning goal with 22:39 on the clock on a breakaway from Mason.
The second half was evenly matched as UMass Dartmouth tallied four shots to Salem States' three. The Vikings had four penalty corners, while the Corsairs had three in the second half, but neither team would score for the remainder of the game as the Vikings held on.
UMass Dartmouth will now prepare for Roger Williams on the road on Monday at 7 p.m.
