CASTLETON, Vt. - Juniors
Joey Paiva and
Brandon Araujo each picked up a second-half goal to propel the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team to its first Little East Conference (LEC) win of the season over Castleton, 2-0, Saturday afternoon.
Paiva netted his team-leading fourth goal of the year for the Corsairs (2-9-4, 1-5-1 LEC), while Araujo picked up his second score of the season. The Spartans (5-9-2, 2-4-1 LEC) were held scoreless for the seventh time this season. UMass Dartmouth can still sneak its way into the LEC Tournament with a win or tie against Eastern Connecticut and help in the season finale.
UMass Dartmouth came firing out of the gates with 10 shots to just two for Castleton. Paiva and sophomores
Cameron Jacob and
Lucas Passaro all had shots on goal that were denied.
It took until the 60th minute for Paiva to make it a 1-0 lead. A Castleton turnover led to space for the teams leading-goal scorer, who made the most of his opportunity.
After a number of chances to extend the advantage, Aruajo made it happen in the 83rd minute with a one-timer off an assist from graduate student Desner Martinez.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jack Waterhouse recorded his second shutout of the season. The Corsairs held a 19-6 advantage in shots and 6-0 on target.
UMass Dartmouth hosts Coast Guard for its final nonconference game of the season on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
