DARTMOUTH, Mass. -Â An 85th minute goal was the difference in the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's, 2-1, setback against Coast Guard Tuesday night at Cressy Field.
The Corsairs (2-10-4) stayed competitive with the Bears (10-2-4) throughout the match. Sophomore
Justin Petrillo scored for UMass Dartmouth, while senior John Flood sent home both goals for Coast Guard.
Coast Guard started the match with many opportunities, piling up five corner kicks in the first 25 minutes of action. Finally, on the sixth corner of the night in the 27th minute, the Bears got on the board when senior John DiTommaso sent the long pass to Flood, who found the back of the net.
UMass Dartmouth responded quickly in the 32nd minute on its first shot on goal. Sophomore
Cameron Jacob sent a perfect cross pass to a streaking Petrillo, who tucked it past the keeper for the equalizer. Each team would get one shot off for the remainder of the half as it stayed a tied game at the break.
The Corsairs' defense stepped up and sophomore goalkeeper
Anthony Buttafoco made a pair of saves to keep the score even late into the match. Coast Guard's Flood headed home the game winner in the 85th minute off a free kick from junior Charles Fish and a one-time pass from DiTommaso to finish things off.
UMass Dartmouth is home on Saturday for a 4 p.m. start against Eastern Connecticut for Senior Day. The Corsairs have a chance to make the LEC Tournament with a win and some help around the conference.
