DARTMOUTH, Mass. -Â The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's soccer celebrated its four seniors,
Maddie Beaulieu,
Acadia Cass,
Kat Hubbard and
Mya Parker Saturday afternoon prior to its matchup with Castleton Saturday afternoon. It was the Spartans who would come out on top, 2-1.
The Corsairs fall to 3-12-1 and 1-6 in the Little East Conference (LEC), while the Spartans improve to 7-9-1 and 4-2-1 in the conference.
Castleton went into the half with a 1-0 lead, and both the Corsairs and Spartans scored once in the second half.
The first half of the contest was back-and-forth with possession, with most of the play surrounding midfield. Castleton's freshman Becky Hannwacker scored late in the 43rd minute to give the Spartans the lead going into halftime.
In the second half, UMass Dartmouth came out aggressively on the attack, with a couple of great opportunities to score. Senior
Mya Parker had a strong second half on her senior night, with a close attempt that was saved early in the half.
Â
UMass Dartmouth had another chance to even it up in the 58th minute on a shot from grad student
Kait Bernier that was denied by Castleton's senior goalie, Alex Benfatti.
The Spartans extended their lead in the 68th minute on a score from their senior Jamie Ledoux, which was immediately answered just three minutes later, on a tremendous shot in the top right corner from Corsairs Freshman
Emily Khang.
Trailing 2-1, the Corsairs fought to the very end, but were unable to overcome the Spartans.
UMass Dartmouth is at Worcester State on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
