Corsairs Start Season with 4-2 Victory Over UMass Boston

Junior Michael Mania picked up two goals

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Michael Mania netted a pair of goals for the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in its season-opening win, 4-2, over UMass Boston.

The Corsairs start the season 1-0, while UMass Boston begins at 0-1.
 
UMass Boston opened the scoring in the first period, when freshman Grady Freidman scored off a pass from classmate Jude Kurtas. The Corsairs were able to answer with a short-handed goal in the 20th minute off the stick of freshman Alex Newton. The goal was assisted by senior Justin Weinbrenner to even the score at 1-1 after one period.
 
Mania scored his first goal of the night seven minutes into the second period off assists from freshman Tyler Stewart and senior Jake Maynard to give the Corsairs their first lead. UMass Boston freshman Jazz Krivtsov was able to even the score again late in the second period and going into the final 20 minutes.  

UMass Dartmouth was able to retake its lead 10 minutes into the final period. Freshman Matthew Zdanowicz found the back of the net on a pass from classmate Kevin Johnston. Mania would add to the Corsairs' lead with his second goal of the night in the final minute on a power play. Stewart and senior Michael Perrone assisted on the final score.   
 
Senior goalie Daniel Davidson had a career night to start the season. He tallied a career-high 52 saves on 54 shots (.963). With that performance he starts the season 1-0 as a starter.
 
UMass Boston outshot UMass Dartmouth 54-27, but the Corsairs took better advantage of their opportunities to come out on top
 
UMass Dartmouth returns to action at 5 p.m. on Saturday against Stonehill College (4-1) at Hetland Arena.
