Corsairs Prevail, 5-2, at Home

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth hockey team finish the game strong to beat MASCAC rival Salem State on Saturday, 5-2.

The Corsairs advance to 3-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the MASCAC, while the Vikings drop to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in conference action.

Salem State opened the scoring 16:44 into the opening frame when senior Matt Yianacopolus found the back of the net. Yianacopolus's goal was unassisted and would be the only score of the first period.

UMass Dartmouth would take control of the game in the second period after going into it down 0-1. The Corsairs tallied three scores throughout the stanza, two of which came in the first 3 minutes. The first score came from junior Michael Mania, with assists credited to senior Stephon Perreault and freshman Tyler Stewart. The go-ahead score for the Corsairs came off the stick of senior Justin Weinbrenner on a pass from his classmate Jake Maynard. Maynard then scored a goal of his own with four minutes remaining, assisted by junior Dominic Dumas.
The Corsairs would finish period 2 perfect with three unanswered scores and go into the final frame leading 3-1.

Salem State was not ready to throw in the towel just yet, as their freshman Zach Dill would begin the scoring in the third period to cut the UMass Dartmouth lead to one. The Corsairs responded with two more scores, coming from freshmen Matthew Zdanowicz and Kevin Johnston. Zdanowicz's goal came at 13:09 and was assisted by Dumas and senior Michael Perrone. Johnston's score came just one minute later thanks to passes from Weinbrenner and Maynard.

Corsairs' senior goalkeeper Daniel Davidson had a couple of outstanding saves on his way to another win. He finished with 28 saves on 30 shots.
UMass Dartmouth would finish the contest with a dominant win, 5-2, over Salem State.

The Corsairs were 0-4 on power-play opportunities, the Vikings were 0-3. The Corsairs out-shot the Vikings 34-30.
