CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -Â Five members of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's basketball team scored in double figures to defeat MIT, 82-72, and snap a two-game losing streak Saturday at the Rockwell Cage.
The Corsairs (3-2) outscored the Engineers (1-3), 23-7, during the last six minutes of regulation. Graduate student Jordan Moretti tallied 19 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals, while classmate Shaelyn Carreiro tallied 14 points and seven boards, and Caroline Wilson, junior Kaylin Zalewski and freshman Melanie DeMeo all finished with 11 points.
After MIT took a  22-13 lead with 1:14 left in the first quarter, UMass Dartmouth ended its scoring drought courtesy of a 3-pointer by grad student Caroline Wilson with nine seconds remaining.
After Zalewski opened the second with a layup just 12 seconds into the second stanza, the Engineers went on a 17-6 run that gave the home team a 39-24 advantage at the 3:52 mark. The Corsairs countered with a 3-point play by Jaeylin Lavigne, which set off a 12-2 run as junior Teja Andrews made a layup to make it a 41-36 deficit at halftime.
UMass Dartmouth carried the momentum into the third quarter as baskets by Zalewski, Moretti, and grad student Jessica Carroll put the Corsairs in front, 42-41, at the 8:36 mark. There would be 11 lead changes during the remainder of the quarter until a free throw from Andrews gave the Corsairs a 57-56 edge heading to the fourth.
The Engineers went back ahead, 65-59, with 6:14 on the clock. UMass Dartmouth gradually mounted a 15-3 run as a layup by Andrews moved the score to 74-68 at the 2:11 mark and a 3-pointer from DeMeo set off an 8-1 game-ending run by the Corsairs.
The Corsairs shot 49.2 percent (29-of-59) from the floor, 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from behind the arc, and 57.7 percent (15-of-26) at the charity stripe.
UMass Dartmouth continues its road trip on Tuesday at Roger Williams for a 7 p.m. game.
