Corsairs Fall in First Round of Stovepipe Tournament

HOOKSETT, N.H. – UMass Dartmouth opened up the Stovepipe tournament on Saturday against the New England College. New England College scored a game-winner in overtime to prevail over UMass Dartmouth, 3-2.

The Corsairs drop to 3-4-2 overall, while the Pilgrims advance to 3-5.

The Stovepipe Tournament began slow, with a scoreless first period. The Corsairs had three powerplays to the Pilgrim's two, but neither team capitalized with an early score. The score was 0-0 at the break, leading to a much busier second frame.

Four minutes into the second period, UMass Dartmouth senior Sky Silverstein was able to give the Corsairs the lead while they were short-handed. Silverstein's goal was assisted by freshman Jimmy Mettler. A minute and a half later, New England College senior Brendan White tied the game at 1-1.

This high-action period of play was not over yet, as the two programs traded another set of goals with each other. The Corsairs scored first, off the stick of freshman Tyler Stewart. Junior Michael Mania and freshman Hank McDonough assisted on Stewart's goal. The Pilgrims' answer came from their senior Jhuwon Davis. Davis's goal evened the score at 2-2 at the end of the second stanza.

After a back and forth second period, both teams went into the third looking to take control of the contest.  Each team would have two minutes of powerplay opportunities before the end of regulation, with no success. The two defenses would hold off the attack and send the game into overtime.

In 3v3 play, UMass Dartmouth relied on junior Cade Hanley and seniors Silverstein and Jake Maynard. New England College played sophomore Mattias Thoren and juniors Anthony Cinato and Linus Udd Hellgren. It was Cinato who would put in the game-winner for the Pilgrims, and ended the hopes of the Corsairs for this match. Cinato's unassisted score lifted New England College to a 3-2 overtime victory.

The Corsairs out-shot the Pilgrims 37-32. New England College won the battle on faceoffs 38-35.

The Stovepipe Tournament continues Sunday when UMass Dartmouth will face off against Tufts at 1:40 p.m. Tufts lost a close contest, 4-3, to Southern New Hampshire on Saturday.
