NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth hockey team fell in its first Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup, 4-2, to Worcester State Thursday night at Hetland Arena.
The Corsairs drop to 1-2 on the season, and 0-1 in the MASCAC, while the Lancers advance to 1-2 and 1-0 in conference play. Junior
Michael Mania and freshman Tyler were the goal-scoreres for UMass Dartmouth.
UMass Dartmouth opened the scoring at the 18:54 mark of the first period, when Mania found the back of the net off a pass from freshman
Matthew Zdanowicz and senior
Jake Maynard. The Corsairs held onto the one goal lead going into the first intermission.
Worcester State senior Kevin Drevitch answered off assists from sophomore Brian Clougherty and freshman Anders Grongstad to even the game at one with 10:04 to go in the second. The Lancers continued the attack in the second period, with two more goals coming in from senior Mikey Wilson and junior Max Tucker. Grongstad's score came during a Worcester State power play.
UMass Dartmouth entered the final period down 3-1 and came out looking to attack. Stewart narrowed the lead off assists from Mania and freshman
Lane Ruffner to make it 3-2 with 8:16 to go. The Corsairs then had opportunities during a power play with five minutes left. After not being able to tie the game up, UMass Dartmouth pulled its goalie, but the Lancers' defense held up and scored a long goal on an empty net to seal the game.
The Corsairs outshot Worcester state 34-24 on goal. Worcester State's sophomore goalie Jakub Kubik earns his first win of the season, while senior
Daniel Davidson falls to 1-2.
UMass Dartmouth travels to Framingham State in another MASCAC matchup play next Thursday at 7:40 p.m.
