Big Second Period Pushes Worcester State Past Corsairs

The Lancers scored four times in the second

WORCESTER, Mass. - Worcester State scored four times in the second period to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth hockey team, 6-3, Monday afternoon at the Fidelity Bank Ice Center.

The Corsairs (8-13-1, 5-10-1 MASCAC) drop their seventh game in a row. Juniors Michael Perrone, Clay Ellerbrock and Ryan Mascali netted the three goals for UMassD. Junior Deiter Stange tallied a hat trick for the final three goals for the Lancers (10-11-1, 7-7-1 MASCAC), while seniors Nick Pennucci, Max Roth and Henry Bruckner scored as well.

UMass Dartmouth had victory on its mind early as it only took 32 seconds for sophomore Dominic Dumas to find Perrone for the first goal of the game. The Corsairs extended their lead to 2-0 at the 12:34 mark of the first when Ellerbrock lit the lamp off an assist from 5th-year senior Kai Kapossy.

Worcester State simply took over in the second, scoring a pair of quick goals in the period and another couple later in the stanza. The Lancers took advantage of their power-play opportunity. Roth found Pennucci 2:05 into the period to make it a one-goal game and Roth tied it just over two minutes later with assists from junior Kevin Drevitch and sophomore Drew Eid. Stange gave the Lancers the lead with 15:04 on the clock from freshmen Max Moriarty and Max Tucker. Bruckner finished the scoring in the second with helpers from Brendan Ronan and freshman Bridgham Neuhold to make it a 4-2 lead.

Jimmy Pelton found Mascali midway through the third to cut the Corsair deficit to 4-3. But two more goals from Stange from Ronan and Roth put the game away for Worcester State.

UMass Dartmouth returns to the ice on Tuesday at Framingham State for an 8:20 p.m. puck drop.
