DARTMOUTH, Mass. – A slow start by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's basketball team was quickly erased as the home team took control to defeat Southern Maine, 84-63, Saturday afternoon at the Tripp Athletic Center.
The Corsairs (13-5, 7-2 LEC) are now on a five-game winning streak and five members of the team scored in double figures. 5th-year senior
Meagan Donovan led the way with 15 points on 4-of-6 from three and six rebounds, while senior
Jessica Carroll also had a big day from deep, finishing with 14 points on 4-of-5 from long range. Senior
Jordan Moretti had 13 points and nine assists, senior
Shaelyn Carreiro tallied 11 points, and sophomore
Faye Veilleux notched 10.
UMass Dartmouth was on fire from deep, shooting 11-of-20 (55%). The team also had 20 assists on 30 made baskets.
Senior Victoria Harris was the best performer for the Huskies (5-11, 4-3 LEC). Finishing with 23 points and 10 boards.
Southern Maine looked like the better team in the first. After the Corsairs took a 7-6 lead halfway through the quarter, the Huskies went on a 12-4 run with nine of those points coming from the free throw line, to go ahead 18-11, with 1:42 on the clock. Moretti stopped the streak with a triple, but two more at the stripe for USM made it a 20-14 Husky lead after one.
Back-to-back 3-pointers and a corner jumper brought the Southern Maine advantage to 28-14 at 8:29 in the second. Carroll then hit a three to spark the UMass Dartmouth offense as the Corsairs ran away with a 23-2 run over the final eight minutes of the half to take a 37-30 lead at the break.
Sophomore
Teja Andrews and Carreiro started the third with consecutive buckets to extend the lead to 41-30. The 3-pointers then began to fall as Donovan, Carroll and sophomore
Kaylin Zalewski each hit one from deep. Senior
Caroline Wilson made a pair of layups in the quarter as well to make it a 62-43 game heading to the fourth.
Carroll sunk another deep ball to start the fourth, and Donovan made three triples in-a-row to put the game officially out of reach.
UMass Dartmouth plays Southern Maine again, this time on the road on Sunday at 1 p.m.
