GORHAM, Maine – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's basketball team let an 11-point fourth quarter lead slip to one, but hung on to secure its sixth consecutive win, 67-66, Sunday at Southern Maine.
After a 3-pointer by sophomore
Teja Andrews gave the Corsairs (14-5, 8-2 LEC) a 63-52 lead with 7:40 remaining in the game and UMass Dartmouth looked poised to cruise to the victory. The Huskies (5-12, 4-4 LEC) would not go quietly though, capitalizing on six UMassD turnovers to go on a 12-2 run over the next five minutes, making it a one-point game, 65-64, with 2:35 to go.
Senior
Jordan Moretti hit a free throw to go up two at the two-minute mark. Then USM's sophomore Amy Flemming had a chance to even the score at 66 with one-minute left, but only made one at the stripe to make it a one-point game.
Southern Maine was able to get the ball back with an opportunity to take the lead, but a missed 3-pointer set up Moretti, who made it 67-65 with 15 seconds to go. The Huskies got an open corner three off at the buzzer, but the shot came up short, as the Corsairs escaped with the victory.
Senior
Shaelyn Carreiro scored in double figures for the fifth-straight game, this time piling up a season-high 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting and 3-of-3 from downtown with 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the year. Sophomore
Kaylin Zalewski was also in double figures with 10 points. Moretti finished with nine points, six rebounds and three assists, while Andrews tallied seven points and eight boards.
The Corsairs held Southern Maine to 23-of-68 shooting from the field (33.8%) and 1-of-14 (7.1%) from long range. Senior Victoria Harris led the Huskies with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
UMass Dartmouth currently sits in third place in the Little East Conference standings with five games left to play.
