MEDFORD, Mass. -Â The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team was tied late in game one, and led early in game two at No. 15 Tufts, but ended up falling, 5-2 and 11-5, Monday afternoon at Huskins Field.
The Corsairs drop to 11-15, while the Jumbos improve to 19-6.
GAME ONE
The Corsairs took an early 1-0 lead in the first game by manufacturing a run. Freshman Devyn Vezina led off with a walk, took second on a ground out, went to third on a bad pick-off attempt, and scored on a single through the left side by sophomore Jared Neikam. Tufts would answer with two in the second. With one out, a single, a walk, and a hit-batter loaded the bases. The Jumbos then singled home a run and worked a sacrifice fly to go up, 2-1.
UMass Dartmouth evened it up with one in the fifth, sparked by freshman Scott Cromack with one out. He singled through the right side, stole second, and scored on a single by junior DJ Perron. However, right away in the bottom of the fifth, the Jumbos scored three for the 5-2 lead. With the bases loaded again, a single and a double extended the Tufts lead.
Junior Andrew Bryant had a hit and a walk for the Corsairs.
GAME TWO
Both teams scored big in the second inning of game two. For the Corsairs, Neikam's single started a three-run inning. Another single by sophomore Matt Tempone and a hit-batter loaded the bases. Neikam and Tempone would score on a Jumbo error. Cromack then had an RBI single later in the inning. However, Tufts would respond with five runs with a two-run homer, a two-run single, and the fifth run scored on a wild pitch.
An RBI groundout made it a 6-3Â Jumbo lead in the fourth. The Corsairs would score twice in the top of the fifth. Cromack and Bryant singled with Cromack scoring on a Jumbo error. Tempone then singled in Bryant.
Tufts would break the game open with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the sixth. A pair of base hits, a run scoring on a double play, and another home run made it an 11-5 game to put it out of reach.
Cromack, Bryant and Tempone all had two hits for the Corsairs.
