PROVIDENCE, R.I. -Â The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team dropped a road Little East Conference (LEC) game, 16-6 in seven innings, at Rhode Island College Wednesday afternoon.
The Corsairs fall to 12-19 (3-8 LEC), while the Anchormen improve to 22-7-1 (9-2 LEC). Senior
Zak Souza finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored, while junior
DJ Perron was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
RIC went up 2-0 in the second on an error and a wild pitch. Freshman
Devyn Vezina started the third inning with a single, stole second, and took third and scored on wild pitches to cut the lead in half.
Nine runs in the home half of the third put it out of reach. RIC used a grand slam, a two-run homer, an RBI triple, an RBI single, and a run scored on a wild pitch to make it an 11-1 game heading to the fourth.
A sacrifice fly off the bat of Vezina, and a another wild pitch that allowed Souza to score, gave the Corsairs two back in the fourth. Two more scored in the fifth on Souza's two-RBI double to score Perron and freshman
Scott Cromack, cutting the deficit to 11-5.
A pair of singles gave RIC two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Perron knocked in sophomore
Matthew Klett in the sixth, but a two-run homer and a double made it 16-6 Anchormen, and the game ended in the seventh inning.
UMass Dartmouth hosts Plymouth State on Saturday for a doubleheader at 12 and 3 p.m.
