UMass Dartmouth Splits Doubleheader With Plymouth State

Sophomore Jared Neikam homered in game two

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth baseball team Split its doubleheader against Plymouth State on Saturday, dropping the first game 14-0 and winning game two 7-4.

The Corsairs (13-20, 4-9 LEC) stay in the hunt for the Little East Conference Tournament, while the Panthers (14-21, 5-8 LEC) are in a good position to make the postseason as the season comes to a close.

GAME ONE
It was all Plymouth State from start to finish. A two-run home run off the bat of junior Griffin Crane quickly gave the Panthers a 2-0 advantage in the first inning.

An RBI fielder's choice put two runners on base and sophomore Joshua Welsh crushed a three-run shot to extend the lead to 7-0 after three innings.

Another home run, this time a two-run bomb from sophomore Luke Sokolsky, made it 9-0 in the sixth.

A trio of wild pitches, and a pair of RBI singles pushed the lead to 14-0 in the seventh to finish it off.

Freshman Chase Pariseau went 2-for-2 with a walk to lead the Corsairs offensively.

GAME TWO
UMass Dartmouth came back to even the season series with a 7-4 victory. Sophomore Jared Neikam was 3-for-4 with a two-run home run, while freshman Scott Cromack finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Freshman Adam Maher, senior Ryan Bruning, who got the win, and graduate student Logan Maitland, who picked up the save, combined for seven scoreless innings in relief on the mound.

Plymouth State jumped ahead to a 4-0 lead after the first two innings. Three came across in the first on an error where two runs scored, and an RBI single.

It took until the third for UMass Dartmouth to get on the board. With one out, Cromack doubled to right field and came all the way around to score on an error.

The Corsairs evened the scored in the fourth. After junior DJ Perron walked, Neikam sent his second home run of the season over the right-field fence. Cromack then singled home Chase Stafford to make it a 4-4 game.

Stafford singled and stole second to start the sixth and it was Cromack again, who laced a base hit to right, to give the Corsairs a 5-4 advantage.

The final two runs crossed the plate in the eighth when freshman Devyn Vezina singled in seniors Tyler Lyons and Kyle Denis.
