DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth field hockey team held off Regis College, 3-2, in its home opener Thursday night at Cressy Field.
Sophomore
Jenna Carvalho led the Corsairs (2-1) with a goal and an assist. Scoring her first-career goal was freshman
Kaylie Pereira, and sophomore
Maggie McCafferty found the back of the cage as well. Sophomore Frankie Alley scored both goals for the Pride (1-4).
Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Trombly stopped Regis' first penalty corner opportunity three minutes in. Pereira then broke the scoreless tie at the 13:19 mark with a goal that found its way through a crowd assisted by Carvalho.
The Pride answered on a counterattack with 20:43 in the second quarter when Alley took the ball down the field and found the back of the cage for her fourth goal of the season, tying the match at 1-1.
Just three-and-a-half minutes later, the Corsairs took the lead for good by successfully executing a penalty corner opportunity. Sophomore Harley Hodge and Carvalho set up McCafferty for her second goal of the year.
Hodge pressured the Pride defense with three shots in the first five minutes of the third quarter, including one that hit the post and another that was turned away. The Corsairs took advantage of another penalty corner opportunity at 35:08 to increase their lead as senior Mya Amaral set up Carvalho for her first goal of the season.
Alley cut the Regis deficit to one with 6:11 remaining in regulation as she corralled the rebound of her own shot and beat Trombly for her second goal of the contest. The Pride could not create another scoring opportunity down the stretch as the Corsairs held on for the victory.
UMass Dartmouth outshot Regis 14-9, led by Hodge with five shots.
The Corsairs begin Little East Conference play next at Castleton on Sunday at 11 a.m.
