NEWPORT, R.I. – A pair of early goals lifted Salve Regina to a 2-0 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Wednesday night. Salve's junior duo of Jordan Borges and Nick Diamond netted the two goals.
The Corsairs fall to 0-1-1 on the early season, while the Seahawks improve to 1-0-2. Junior goalkeeper Anthony Buttafoco made a career-high 11 saves in the contest.
The Seahawks scored on their third shot of the match in the third minute. Borges went unassisted and fired home his first goal of the year.
Moments later in the 21st minute, Borges found Diamond to extend the lead to 2-0.
That was all Salve Regina would need as its defense stepped up for the remainder of the game. Junior Joey Paiva had three shots with one on goal, while freshmen Cameron Aguiar and Jake Silva, and junior Kalvin Garcia all had one.
UMass Dartmouth hosts its alumni event on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Salem State at Cressy Field. It is also the SAAC Game of the Week where the university will have giveaways.
