Field Hockey Falls to Roger Williams

Hawks use strong offensive front to defeat Corsairs

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Powered by a pair of goals from three different players, the Roger Williams field hockey team defeated UMass Dartmouth in non-conference action on Tuesday evening. The Hawks, winners of eight straight, improve to 11-2 with the 9-1 victory, while the Corsairs move to 3-9 on the season.

The visiting Hawks opened the scoring at the 5:25 mark as Abigail Stevens rifled a shot in from the top of the arc. Less than five minutes later, Hannah Timbrouck made it a 2-0 lead, while Roger Williams went up by a three-goal margin 2:31 later.

Chelsea King, the squad's leading scorer, buried a pass from Lily Tobin to close out the opening frame. It was King to open the second stanza, sending an unassisted shot past sophomore goalie Kelsie Couto at 18:03. Tobin went on to make it a 5-0 lead just before half, driving home a pass from Kailey Daddona at 29:22.

Out of the intermission, the Corsairs found the back of the net as Jenna Carvalho powered her way deep into the zone. Trying to find an open lane, she shifted the ball left as Kaylie Pereira was there to bang it home past the goalie at 30:50 to cut the lead to 5-1.

Despite the momentum, the Corsairs could not hold off the Hawks, who went on to score four more tallies, including the second of the contest for both Timbrouck and Tobin for the final margin.

Starter Hannah Brazil earned the win for the Hawks, playing the first 30 minutes without surrendering a goal or a shot. Jill Haudenshield came on in the third quarter, giving up the Corsairs goal, while Madi Hadley played the final quarter and did not have to make a stop.

For the Corsairs, Couto recorded her first career start against Roger Williams, recording a career-high 18 saves.

UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Saturday, hosting the University of Southern Maine in a 3:30pm LEC tilt on Cressy Field.
