Corsairs Kick Off 2023 LEC Championships in Fine Fashion

UMD posts 67 points behind solid perfomances on first full day of conference meet

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Behind a number of solid performances, the UMass Dartmouth swimming team opened action at the 2023 Little East Conference Championships on Friday at the Boston Sports Institute in Wellesley. The Corsairs compiled 67 points on day one, paced by a sixth place finish from rookie Kylie Winer. Leading this year's meet on the women's side is Keene State College with 279.5 points.

Action opened with the 200-freestyle relay as the foursome of sophomore Anya Wallace, rookie Ella Gerardi, Winer and sophomore Piper Dienst combined for ninth overall with a time of 1:49.80. The Corsairs also saw the group of juniors Natalia Agrelo, Savannah Platt, Hannah Mitus and Melia Bouramia swim an exhibition time of 1:58.48.

Next up in the 500-freestyle, Winer shined in the Championship Final, posting a time of 5:43.23 for sixth overall. That mark bettered her prelim time of 5:44.74 - both times marked season and personal best times in the event. Also competing was Wallace, who finished 10th overall in 5:57.40 for a season best mark. She hit a previous season best in prelims with a 6:00.85.

In the 50-breaststroke, Platt was 16th overall with a time of 40.32. In the morning prelims, she posted a time of 39.03 - which was a season and personal best. Senior Sydney Cayer also swam in the event, earning 19th overall in 40.42.

The 200-backstroke saw Dienst take ninth overall with a season and personal best time of 2:24.88. That eclipsed her previous bests', set in the morning prelims of 2:25.78. Mitus also competed in the 200 back, finishing 15th in the prelims in a season and personal best mark of 2:36.33, while Agrelo aslso hit a season best in the event with a time of 2:51.86.

Bouramia rounded out the individual competition for the Corsairs, swimming to 22nd in the prelims in the 50-freestyle with a time of 29.60.

The final event of the evening was the 400-medley relay, which saw Dienst, Winer, Gerardi and Wallace combine for 4:36.05, which placed them ninth overall in the field.

Action continues at this year's Championship Meet on Saturday at the Boston Sports Institute with preliminaries getting underway at 10am. Finals begin at 6:30pm each evening.Fans can follow all the action by going to the Tournament Central page at https://littleeast.com/tournaments/?id=40
