GORHAM, Maine - A big effort in game one helped lift the UMass Dartmouth softball team to a doubleheader split at the University of Southern Maine. The Corsairs earned a 6-5 game one victory and are now 17-10 overall and 4-4 in the Little East. The Huskies are now 9-14 and 3-4 in conference play.
Game one saw the homestanding Huskies open up a quick 2-0 lead in the first as a two-run single up the middle from Rona Scott brought USM the advantage.
In the fourth inning with bases loaded,
Hailey Lyons singled to second, driving in a run, which was followed by a two-run double to center from
Lindsay Chubbuck for the 3-2 advantage. Next up,
Leah Major singled to center, bringing home two runs of her own as UMD opened the 5-2 margin.
In the sixth, Chubbuck drove an RBI double to left, but the Huskies answered in the bottom half of the inning. A single to left with two on saw one come across. A single toward the shortstop closed the gap further (6-4) and a walk to Lauren Merrill with the bases loaded brought in another score.
Corsairs hurler
Kaitlyn Shirshac earned the save, going 1.1 innings with just one hit allowed. Starter
Jill Richards earned the victory, allowing five runs (1 earned) on sixth hits over 5.2 innings. She struck out one in the contest.Â
For the Spartans, Merrill shouldered the loss in the circle, allowing five runs on seven hits. She struck out three and walked just one on the day.Â
Game two went in the favor of the Huskies as they opened the second inning with Hannah Shields opening with a single. In the third, the Huskies continued to press, as Merrill drilled a two-run single to left. An RBI double to right from Shields saw USM with the 4-0 lead they would not surrender.
In the circle, USM's Belle Snyder earned the win, allowing no runs or hits over 7.0 innings. She struck out six and walked three. For UMD, Shirshace suffered the losst. surrendering four runs (3 earned) on 6.0 innings.Â
UMass Dartmouth is back in action on Tuesday with a doubleheader at UMass Boston. Game one is set for a 3pm start.
