DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Backed by a two-hit shutout from senior pitcher,
Ryan Qualey, UMass Dartmouth's baseball team cruised to a 5-0 victory over the visiting Farmingdale State in the Corsairs Game of the Week on Saturday. With the win, the Corsairs advance to 16-12 for the season, while the Rams drop to 13-12.
After four and a half innings, the game was scoreless when sophomore
Devyn Vezina led off the bottom of the inning with a single up the middle. Next up was senior
DJ Perron, coming off a huge game against Suffolk on Thursday. Perron smashed a double to the right center field gap, advancing Vezina to third. Senior
Andrew Bryant knocked in his first RBI of the day as he grounded out to second base, scoring Vezina. Perron then scored on a two-out single off the bat of junior
Andrew Possi, giving the Corsairs a 2-0 lead after four innings.
UMD's bats picked back up in the sixth inning, beginning with a Perron single up the middle. Following him was Bryant, who crushed a two-run shot well over the right field fence, extending the Corsairs' lead to 4-0. UMass Dartmouth was able to hold the Rams to nothing offensively, and added one more run in the bottom of the eighth for good measure.
Qualey finished the game having faced 32 batters, allowing just two hits and striking out five. Qualey (2-3) picked up his second win of the season in dominant fashion.
Bryant led the way for the Corsairs offensively, going 2-for-4 with three RBI's including his two-run homer. Bryant also scored twice. Possi had a solid day from the plate as well, going 3-for-4 and knocking in two RBI's. Perron also had a two-hit game and crossed home twice.
For Farmingdale State, freshman Ryan Wasserman and senior Louis Annunziata tallied the only two hits, both singles. Shouldering the loss on the mound for the Rams was freshman TJ Cox (1-2). Also seeing time on the mound was freshman Michael Camardi.
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Tuesday for a Little East Conference matchup with Rhode Island College. First pitch is set for 3:30 PM.
