DARTMOUTH, Mass. – With the game tied at 4-4, the LEC-leading Anchormen scored a go-ahead run in the seventh inning, that proved to be the game winner. The Corsairs (16-13; 5-6 LEC) fell 4-5 to Rhode Island College (23-11; 10-1 LEC).
The Corsairs score the game's first run in the bottom of the third, but the Anchormen responded with two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to go up 4-1. Trailing by three runs in the bottom of the fifth, the home teams bats heated up, scoring three runs in the inning to even the contest at 4-4.
The bottom of the fifth was led off by the start of UMass Dartmouth's batting order. Sophomore
Devyn Vezina kicked it off with a single down the left field line. Senior
DJ Perron was walked, bringing up fellow senior
Andrew Bryant. Bryant tied the game at 4-4 with one swing, as he crushed a homerun over the right field wall.
With the game tied up, RIC's junior Cameron Santerre made it on base in the top of the seventh. Santerre made his way to third thanks to some nifty baserunning. Santerre was able to score the eventual game winner after tagging up on a flyout to left field, off the bat of sophomore Daniel Trzepacz.
Offensively, Rhode Island saw seven different batters earn hits, and no one getting more than one. Santerre had one of those hits and a walk, and scored two runs including the game winner. Senior Joey Coro went 1-for-3 with a hit, a walk, and an RBI.
The Corsairs' offense was headed by Bryant, who went 2-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI's, all from his three-run shot in the fifth inning. UMD saw multiple hits from Vezina,
Andrew Possi (junior),
T.J. Keefe (junior) and
Chase Stafford (senior).
RIC's senior Connor Davey (6-2) earned the win, going 6.0 innings as he allowed four runs (3 earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts. Fellow senior Colin Gauthier came in for the final three innings and earned his sixth save of the season.
For the Corsairs, sophomore
Adam Maher (4-2) shouldered the loss allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits over 8.0 innings of work. He struck out one batter. Junior
Andrew Steinhubel took over the final inning of work.
UMD is back at it tomorrow, when they host #5 seeded Endicott College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30pm.
