DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth Baseball team jumped ahead to a 5-1 lead after five innings before conference rival UMass Boston ran up nine more scores as they knocked off UMD, 10-5 on Wednesday. The Corsairs slip to 17-16 overall with a Little East Conference record of 6-8, while the Beacons improve to 21-15 and hold a conference record of 9-5.
In the top of the sixth inning, with the Corsairs leading 5-1, UMass Boston began their nine-run spree with two runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 5-3. The Beacons completed their comeback in the eighth inning, when two more runs evened the score at 5-5. In the top of the ninth, UMB rattled off five more runs, giving them their first lead and putting a five-run gap between them and the Corsairs.
The Corsairs saw a three-hit game from junior T.J. Keefe, who went 3-for-5 and scored a run. Perron went 1-for-3 with a first inning solo-homerun, his twelfth of the season. Senior Chase Stafford and junior Matt Tempone each added two hits and an RBI. Sophomore Adam Maher started the game on the mound, but shouldering the loss was his classmate Andrew Steinhubel (4-4).
For UMass Boston, the offense was headed by freshman Breon Parker, who went 3-for-6 with two RBI's. The Beacons also saw three hits from grad student Craig Corliss, who was 3-for-4 with a walk and a scored run. Senior Gianni Zarrilli Jr. scored three times to go along with his two hits. Earning the win on the mound was junior Sam Gray (2-0).
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Thursday when they host Roger Williams in their final non-conference bout of the 2023 season. The contests is scheduled for 3:30pm.
