FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – After allowing an early three-goal burst, the UMass Dartmouth men's soccer team slips 3-0 to Framingham State in their season opener. The Corsairs begin their regular season with a record of 0-1 while the Rams get off to a 1-0 start.
20 minutes into the contest, Framingham State scored their first goal of the 2023 season. The score came from freshman Kaio Santos Da Silva, who finished his first game with two goals. The Rams continued firing, rattling off two more scores in a five-minute window, coming off the feet of Gustav Hemmingsen and Santos Da Silva once again.
The Corsairs had a great opportunity to put one in with 18 minutes remaining, when senior
Brayan Rivas was awarded a free kick from just outside the top box. Rivas's strike was on target, but a diving save from Framingham State's junior keeper Joseph Sturzo kept UMass Dartmouth scoreless.
Despite the scoreless 90 minutes, the Corsairs showed relentless aggression on the offensive side of the pitch. Senior
Joey Paiva took seven shots throughout the contest, five of which were on-goal. Fellow senior
Rafael Raposo attempted three shots. Three other Corsairs tallied multiple shot attempts; Rivas and freshmen
Mario Rodriguez and
Seth Lee. Senior
Jack Waterhouse (0-1) started in goal for the Corsairs, he played all 90 minutes and made three saves.
The Rams kicked off their season by scoring three goals in a five-minute window early in the first half. Santos Da Silva led the way with two goals on four shot attempts. Hemmingsen scored the other goal for Framingham State off a setup from senior Jeffson Malachie had two tries that went off target. Tallying assists for the Rams was Malachie and junior Lachlan Forgan. Defending the net for Framingham State was Sturzo (1-0), who made 11 saves in a shut out win for the Rams.
UMass Dartmouth men's soccer hosts their home-opener on Saturday, when the Hawks of Roger Williams College travel to Dartmouth for a 3:00PM kickoff.
