DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's soccer team's were handed their first loss of the season in a 1-0 defeat to Maine Maritime. With the loss, the Corsairs move to 2-1-2 while the Mariners remain lossless at 5-0-1. 
UMass Dartmouth's strong showing so far this season on the defensive end showed itself early on, with Maine Maritime not getting a single shot off in the first half of play. In the first half, two freshman were able to get quality looks on goal, in 
Adriana Adames and 
Haley Rutherford. Adames had a free kick attempt from just outside the box at the 15
th minute that went wide of the net. Rutherford had an opportunity late in the half that was turned away by the Mariners' keeper.
Maine Maritime brought on the attack to start the second half, recording five of their eight total shots in the first 15 minutes of the period. The Corsairs defense and freshman goalkeeper 
Grace Conti were able to keep the Mariners scoreless, that is until the 73
rd minute, when Maine Maritime freshman Annabella Scolaro netted the first and only goal of the contest. Following Scolaro's score, the Mariners were able to hang on the rest of the way as they took a 1-0 victory over the Corsairs on Cressy Field.
UMass Dartmouth and Maine Maritime were dead even on shot attempts in this one with eight each. The Corsairs won the shots-on-target battle 4-3. Conti played the full 90 minutes and made two saves before allowing the first goal past her for her career thus far. The Mariners' freshman goalie Isa Thesing recorded four saves and kept UMD scoreless through 90 minutes. 
The UMass Dartmouth women's soccer team returns to the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 20, when they travel to Newport, R.I. for a 6:00pm meeting with Salve Regina.
