SALEM, Mass. – Powered by a balanced scoring attack and a defensive shutout, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's soccer team defeated the Salem State Vikings, 3-0, Saturday afternoon. The Corsairs start their year 2-0 with both wins coming on the road, while the Vikings dip to 0-2.
Five minutes into the contest, the Corsairs found themselves on the board early, when freshman
Madison Depina scored her first career goal off a pass from sophomore
Veronica Bock.
The goal put UMD up 1-0 early, but the Corsairs offense didn't let up. Freshman
Amanda Thompson netted her second goal of the season at the 23:04 mark, this one came off a feed from junior
Kaitlyn Nguyen. Thompson is off to a tremendous start to her college career with a score in each of her first two games, including the game-winner against Regis on Friday.
In the 45
th minute, the Vikings' freshman Olivia Henke had an excellent opportunity to score off a corner kick that was denied by the Corsairs' freshman goalkeeper,
Grace Conti. Conti has shown her ability to defend the net in her first two games, still having allowed zero goals and holding a 2-0 record. UMass Dartmouth went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
The Corsairs continued their offensive pressure in the second half. 68 minutes into the contest, the Corsairs scored their third goal. This score came off the foot of senior
Bella Medeiros on an assist from Thompson. UMD was able to stall out the clock the rest of the way, cruising to a 3-0 victory over the Vikings.
UMass Dartmouth was led by Thompson, who was a major part of today's offense with a goal and an assist. Depina and Medeiros were responsible for the other two scores, with Nguyen and Bock each adding assists. Sophomore
Antonella Goncalves subbed into the game and fired three shots on target.
UMass Dartmouth women's soccer return to Dartmouth with two wins under their belt, as they prepare to face Suffolk University in their home-opener on Tuesday. Kickoff is slated for 7:00PM on Cressy Field.
