DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's soccer team was handed their first conference loss of the season at the hands of Southern Maine in the rain on Saturday. The Corsairs slip to a record of 2-3-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference, while the Huskies improve to 7-0-1 and are now 2-0 in Little East play.
The first score came early for Southern Maine, when junior Julia McKenna found the back of the net off her own rebound in the sixth minute of the contest. USM was able to add onto their lead before halftime, when senior Ashley Sabatino scored on a free kick attempt from just outside the box in the 36
th minute.
The Huskies led 2-0 at the start of the second half, and were more than content to back up their offensive pressure and focus on keeping the Corsairs' attack at bay. The second half was a scoreless one as the sun faded and the rain poured on, and Southern Maine went on to win by a score of 2-0.
The Corsairs were out-shot 27-1 by the huskies today, with UMD freshman goalkeeper
Grace Conti making eight saves on ten on-target shots from Southern Maine.
UMass Dartmouth women's soccer returns to the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 27, when they host UMass Boston. The Little East Conference matchup is scheduled for 7pm on Cressy Field.
