King's OT Goal Lifts Field Hockey to Victory

Rookie scores two goals as Corsairs best Eastern, 2-1 in overtime

MANSFIELD, Conn. – Behind an overtime tally from rookie midfielder Sam King, the UMass Dartmouth field hockey team defeated Eastern Connecticut State University, 2-1 in Little East Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Corsairs move to 3-7 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Warriors are now 2-7-1 and 0-1-0 in the LEC.

Locked in a 1-1 score at the end of regulation, the Warriors came in with the momentum, earning seven penalty corners throughout the extra session. In the closing minutes of the contest, the Corsairs got the ball back as senior midfielder and captain Maggie Doherty corralled it in the midfield and sent it forward to King. Racing around a defender, King dribbled the ball toward goal, slipping it past the Eastern keeper for the breakaway game-winner at 68:40.

It was the Corsairs that opened the game's scoring at 43:55 of the game in the third. Off a penalty corner, junior forward Jenna Carvalho fired in a shot on goal as King tipped it in at the corner for the 1-0 advantage.

In the fourth quarter, the Warriors were able to finally capitalize on a penalty corner of their own as Betsy Davis deflected a shot by Leah Kowalasky into the goal past junior goalie Hannah Trombly at 53:53, tying things up at 1-all heading into the closing minutes of the game.

Neither team could find the back of the goal to end the fourth, setting up the overtime session and the dramatic breakaway for King.

For the Corsairs, Trombly earned the victory, stopping nine shots for the afternoon. At the other end, Hannah Jalowiec did not make any stops, surrendering two goals on four shots.

UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Framingham State at 7pm on Cressy Field.
