Field Hockey Posts LEC Victory Over Eastern Connecticut

Corsairs win 2-1 over the Warriors for conference win

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Behind a pair of first quarter goals, the UMass Dartmouth field hockey team defeated Eastern Connecticut State University, 2-1 in Little East Conference action on Saturday. The Corsairs move to 4-9 overall and record their first LEC victory to move to 1-2. The Warriors are now 4-4 with an 0-1 record in conference.

The day also marked Senior Day for the Corsairs as they celebrated forward Kaylie Pereira, midfielder Jenna Carvalho and goalkeeper Hannah Trombly.

The visiting Warriors opened the game's scoring just 1:32 into the opening frame as first year forward Rebecca Minaya scored past Trombly. With the Warriors pressing in, a shot was blocked as the ball trickled out to Minaya, who banked it in.

UMass Dartmouth answered just over three minutes later as rookie Kenzie Bliven found the rebound of her own saved shot, firing it in for the equalizer at 4:33. Nearing the end of the quarter, the Corsairs grabbed the lead as senior captain Jenna Carvalho barrelled into the circle, firing a shot in on goal. Rookie midfielder Ava Lozeau was there, tipping the ball in for the go-ahead.

It was a defensive and scoreless frame in the third, but the Warriors fought to battle in the fourth. Eastern Connecticut fired in five shots as Trombly held strong in goal, turning aside three straight near the end of the quarter to preserve the lead.

Trombly had an outstanding effort in goal, recording nine saves for the victory. In addition, Trombly passed the 300 saves mark for her career. For the Warriors, senior keeper Kiana Webster made four saves.

UMass Dartmouth is back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Roger Williams University for a 4pm game against the Hawks in Bristol.
