Field Hockey Falls to Lyons in Non-Conference Tilt

Corsairs shoulder 3-1 loss to Wheaton

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Wheaton College scored a goal in each of the final three quarters to lift the Lyons to a 3-1 win over UMass Dartmouth in non-conference action on Cressy Field Tuesday afternoon. The victory moves Wheaton to 4-0 on the season, while the Corsairs are now 2-3 overall.

It was the Corsairs that opened the game's scoring as a low cross from senior forward and captain Jenna Carvalho found the stick of sophomore defender Sophia Bouffard at the left post. Bouffard settled and fired a shot in past the reach of Lyons goalie Grace Ferguson just 2:16 into the opening quarter.

The Lyons answered in the second stanza as a backwards sweep from Maria Worden hit the stick of Delia Knox, who got it in past Corsairs rookie goalie Shane Cueman at 17:32.

The 1-1 tie held until the third quarter as Knox registered her second of the contest at 36:47. A shot from Ally Slicer on the left side caromed into the middle and into traffic, kicking up off a foot in the mele. Knox found it in the air, knocked it down and was able to drive it home for the go-ahead score.

Wheaton answered in the final quarter of play as Knox corralled the ball a distance outside the circle on a corner attempt. Passing the ball in, it landed on the stick of Kayla Wilonski, who sent a rocketed shot past Cueman for the Lyons third tally.

Ferguson earned the victory and did not have a save in the contest. Cueman shouldered the loss, recording five saves on the afternoon.

The Corsairs return to action on Thursday at 6pm, hosting Regis College on Cressy Field.
