DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Powered by two goals and an assist from senior captain
Jenna Carvalho, the UMass Dartmouth field hockey team defeated Regis College, 5-0 in non-conference action on Thursday on Cressy Field. The Corsairs move to 3-3 on the season, while the Pride are now 1-2 overall.
The Corsairs got things going in the opening quarter as Carvalho – a midfielder – fired the ball in from the top of the circle off a penalty corner insert from sophomore defender
Sophia Bouffard at 9:57.
UMass Dartmouth packed on the goals in the second stanza, led by Carvalho at 19:51 as she corralled the ball of a blocked shot in front and banked it into the bottom right corner for the 2-0 advantage. The senior factored into the third goal of the contest as well, sending a quick pass from the middle to the right side of the circle. Graduate student midfielder and captain
Maggie McCafferty was there to fire it in past Regis goalie Sarai Velez at 22:55.
McCafferty then garnered an assist of her own on the Corsairs fourth tally, dribbling the ball down the right side into the circle, sliding a pass across to rookie forward
Kenzie Bliven. Settling the ball, Bliven banked it in from the middle for the 4-0 advantage.
The two teams played a scoreless third quarter despite the Corsairs owning a 7-2 shot advantage, but it was UMass Dartmouth rounding out the scoring in the final stanza. Bouffard started the play, inserting the ball on a penalty corner, which went out to Carvalho. Navigating it in, Carvalho sent the ball forward onto the stick of junior forward
Abby Perry.
Looking to make a move, Perry tilted left and scooted the ball forward to Bouffard, who shot it in at the left post for the fifth and final goal of the contest.
In addition to Carvalho, the Corsairs saw McCafferty and Bouffard each finish with a goal and an assist. Rookie goalie
Shane Cueman earned the win, recording three saves through 30:00 of action. Senior
Hannah Trombly came on in relief through the third quarter, recording one save, while junior
Kelsie Couto played the fourth quarter and also had one save.
For the Pride, Velez shouldered the loss, recording six saves on the evening.
