Field Hockey Falls to Clark in Non-Conference Action

Cougars net pair of fourth quarter goals enroute to 5-3 win

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Clark University netted a pair of fourth quarter goals to rally past UMass Dartmouth, 5-3, in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday at Cressy Field. The Cougars move to 4-1 on the season while the Corsairs are now 3-4 overall.

Locked in a 3-all tie heading into the final quarter of play, the visiting Cougars picked up the intensity midway through the frame as graduate student defender Rachael Romain netted the equalizer at 50:27. Clark was awarded a penalty corner and a perfect feed off the insert by junior midfielder Jenna Beauchain hit Romain at the top of the circle. Romain let a bulleted shot fly that sailed into the right corner past UMass Dartmouth goalie Hannah Trombly.

The Cougars added an insurance goal less than five minutes later as a solid pass from the right to left side of the top of the circle from senior midfielder Becca Murphy found Romain once more as she sent another shot flying into the box for the 5-3 advantage.

UMass Dartmouth was unable to get another shot past Cougars goalie Rachel Reiter as senior midfielder Jenna Carvalho's attempt was blocked, while a last minute shot from sophomore forward Brooke Lydon was kicked aside by Reiter.

The Corsairs opened the game's scoring just 2:39 into the first quarter as a deflected pass from Lydon at the goal mouth found sophomore defender Sophia Bouffard at the left corner, banking it in for the 1-0 advantage. UMass Dartmouth added its second tally with 13:18 expired as Carvalho fired in a shot that was tipped into the goal in front by Lydon for a 2-0 lead after one.

Clark cut the deficit in the second quarter as Beauchain tipped in a bulleted shot from Romain. The third quarter saw the visitors tie it up as junior defender Elizabeth Cacciapaglia redirected it to junior forward Ciaran Cubbage who sent it in at 35:33.

The Cougars grabbed the go-ahead tally less than a minute later as Cubbage netted her second of the contest off a feed from junior midfielder Alison Kopec. The Corsairs tied it up at the 43:18 mark as rookie forward Kenzie Bliven found the loose ball after a saved shot and sent it past Reiter.

In goal, Reiter earned the victory, recording six saves on the afternoon. Rookie starter Shane Cueman made one save in 45:00 of action for the Corsairs, while Trombly shouldered the loss and had one save in the final quarter.

Both teams recorded 13 shots in the contest, with the Corsairs owning a 10-8 edge on goal. Clark led in penalty corners by an 11-6 margin.

UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Salve Regina at 7pm on Cressy Field.
